Breaking Resolutions

Happy New Years! Why is it Years not Year? Anyone?  Are we saying have a good year this year, thus the singular – or have a good year this year and all the upcoming years, thus the plural. Who knows? Not even Google. Speak of which, so I’ve seen that some people’s New Years resolution is to use less technology. This includes no texting and less Googling.  I hate to discourage you but you are kind of setting yourself up to fail if you have a Smartphone or a laptop.

But anyways…

Here’s my take on the “technology” resolution. While I love when my phone dies and sometimes don’t charge it just to shut out the world and enjoy those that I am with; it is the same way I reach out to those that I am not with.

Texting at Runway Show

Nothing like texting front row at a runway show :p

As much as texting is the new “aim,” texting is a great way to let people know I am thinking about them when I don’t have the time for a full conversation. I do think texting at the table should be banned. It is just as rude as talking on the phone in a restaurant, but since it is silent, it doesn’t come across that way. Now don’t get me wrong, I do it all the time – but I should do it less. That I accept. I do think people should call more and an ongoing resolution of mine is to try to call those you do not often talk to more. While friendship goes two ways, unfortunately usually one person has to make more of the contact effort than the other. I used to get mad about this, but now I realize that I would rather have all my friends in my life than shut them out because their schedules are too hectic to call.  For they never hold it against me when there are weeks that I am the person with the busy schedule.

Now about the using your brain and Googling less – my brain sometimes runs on empty. On the creative side I’m down, but on history and math not so much. It’s all too sad that when people tell me where they are from that I picture the map below.

Map of US

Cruise and HoffmanSo I say Google more! Rather than debate what the correct answer to something is, why not just find it out so you know for the future. I mean we‘ve all had sleepless nights wondering who is shorter in “Rain ManTom Cruise or Dustin Hoffman? (DH – 5’5”, TC – 5’7”) The next time you are at Bar Trivia or playing 21 questions on a road trip, you’ll be prepared. Thanks Google!

So this New Year/s my resolution to you is simple –“Learn.” Whether I use my brain or google, I will challenge myself a bit harder to learn.  And what I do with what I learn is up to me.
