More Amazing, Creative April Fools’ Day Pranks

It’s Monday and usually I do Music Monday but I just have to share more of these great April Fools’ Day Pranks! Yesterday I shared with you the amazingly well done YouTube Contest and the Google Treasure Hunt, which I successfully completed with some help from some good friends.

April Fools

Today I signed-in to Netflix to find a ridiculous category on my account, “Movies and TV Shows About Seriously Pissed Off Wives.” Turns out they added a slew of categories to different accounts including, “Movies Featuring an Epic Nicholas Cage Meltdown,” “Movies That Are in English but Still Require Subtitles,” and “Reality TV About People With No Concept of Reality.”

Not only has YouTube shut down, but no more loading videos to Vimeo either. It is now Vimeow, a Cat Video only uploading site. Yay cat fans everywhere!

Vimeow

Now this April Fools’ by American Eagle Outfitters is one I really wish was real. I mean spray on jeans, could it get any comfier!

Another incredibly amazing idea, a glass bottom plane! As if Virgin Atlantic could get any cooler. Man I love flying Virgin! I wish all airlines were like them.

Virgin Atlantic

And last but not least, a great idea from my favorite food delivery service, Seamless. They have finally recognized the one flaw with their delivery model and are rectifying it.

There are many more great April Fools’ Day Pranks appearing as the day unfolds including pizza flavored Tic Tacs (yum!) and bacon flavored Scope. Share some of your favorites below!

A Look Back on Love in Prospect Park

I wonder if people will look back on our photos one day in awe, the same awe at how we look at old black and white photos. There is that common saying, “a picture is worth a thousand words,” but the words that black and white images hold are very different than color images.

On this Valentine’s Day I share with you some old photo’s of the beginnings of my grandparent’s relationship in the early 1940′s. My grandmother lived in Toronto and my grandfather in New York. Whenever my grandmother would come visit him she would stay at her sister’s who lived in Brooklyn near Prospect Park. I will let these images speak for themselves but in a gist they include love in Prospect Park, waiting for the train for my grandmother to head back to Toronto, and what I like to call “happily ever after.”

Family Sing-Along via Text Message

Text MessagesMy siblings and I fight hard, but we love even harder. I have to say they truly are my best friends, and I look forward to the day that we all live in the same neighborhood, let alone same time zone. My sister, Oriana, moved to The Big Island, Hawaii, for Teach for America, and after completing her Master’s (woot, congrats!) she decided to stay there to teach. My twin brothers, Aidan and Dotan, recently moved to Los Angeles, California, to wow Hollywood with their acting skills. And lil ole me, as you know, I’m holding down the fort in NYC.

This year was the first holiday season that we weren’t all together. Due to flight prices and vacation days, it just wasn’t possible. So I started a text message sing-along chain and I gotta say, we are one talented family! lol. I then decided to piece the clips together into a masterpiece. With some special guest stars including my Dad who was visiting my sister from Toronto, and my brother’s best friends Zach and Jared (also twins – I know!) who were visiting them from NY, I think we’ve come up with one incredible rendition of “Jingle Bell Rock.”

So Happy Holidays from my family to yours! I hope you enjoy our antics. O and thank you iPhone group messaging feature for helping my family stay in touch!

What Not To Do At A Company Holiday Party

For the past few years, over the holiday season I help out at events to make some extra money. During the past few weeks I’ve had the privilege to attend corporate holiday parties and witness the shenanigans that go down. From those events I think the only right thing to do is to share with you what not to do at a company holiday party…ya know just in case you would ever do any of these, now at least I have warned you not to do them.

At your company holiday party do not be the coworker …
11. who looses your coat ticket and says “well my coat is black, does that help?”
Holiday Party Fail10. that passes out while showing off your latest dance move
9. that holds on to the bar to stand up – who do you think you are fooling while shoving all the leftover appetizers into your mouth?
8. that insists you know all the moves to gangnam style and then kicks someone in the face in the process
7. who hits on all your drunk coworkers, going one by one to each
office hookup6. who falls for the coworker that is hitting on you #awkwardofficehookup
5. who goes home and leaves your winter coat in the coat-check
4. who gets so drunk that you tell your boss how glad you are to have them as a boss and that they are your mentor because well “they are your mentor and you love them”
3. who causes a large scene claiming the staff lost your coat, meanwhile you just got it from coat-check and you are wearing it
2. who goes home and leaves your work laptop bag in the coat-check
1. that asks for your jacket back from coat-check to get the weed brownie out of it that you have been waiting to eat for a special occasion

I hope these tips have been helpful! Happy Holidays!

Patriotic Labor Day Recipes with a Twist

Labor Day celebrates the contributions of American workers.  Oregon was the 1st state to make it a holiday in 1887 and it became a federal holiday in 1894! Since its creation Labor Day has turned into a day celebrate the end of summer in style! You put on your favorite white or seersucker outfit, and enjoy delicious food and drinks amongst family and friends.

Whether you have one giant meal, or sprinkles of gatherings throughout the weekend, patriotic inspired dishes are sure to delight! Here are some I recommend:

Bring on the Unconventional Holidays – A Feast for the Ages

Anyone else annoyed by the fact that CVS already has Halloween Candy out?! Can we just enjoy this last bit of summer before having to acknowledge that cold weather is around the corner? I guess the positive to summer ending, means that holidays are on their way.

Do you think it was done on purpose? Having a whole bunch of holidays in the winter so the snowiest months don’t seem that bad? If it was, I like it!

…And we all know what the best part of holidays are – the food! But there are some current holidays that get shafted on that – Groundhog Day (Feb. 2, 2013) for example. Groundhog Day FeastI think this day should be a proper holiday and we should have a feast with friends. I’m thinking maybe at a giant farmers table, and have it be a rustic meal with wine and cheese. I think groundhogs would approve. What about Read Across America Day (March 2, 2013)? We should have the day off and spend it reading to acknowledge the importance. It also happens to be Dr. Seuss’s birthday, and so a feast of weird treats the characters in his books would enjoy is necessary. I’m thinking a Willy Wonka spread.

What about Law Day (May 1, 2013)? To acknowledge this day I say we break tons of laws in the morning and then repent in the afternoon. I also think all lawyers should have off that day. As for the food, we would eat a spread of Flag Daythe favorite foods of the Justices of the Supreme Court. What about Flag Day (June 14, 2013)? Everyone must wear a version of red, white, and/or blue; and there must be fireworks at night. You can only eat red, white and blue foods that day. Hello strawberry-blueberry yogurt parfait! Wright Brothers Day (Dec 17, 2012) – we should all get 40% off tickets on US airlines. What you eat that day must be served in those plates with dividers/compartments and if heated can only be done in a microwave, in honor of plane food.

Autumnul EquinoxLastly the holiday that is quickly approaching is the Autumnul Equinox on September 22nd.  It lands on a Saturday this year, but if it landed on a weekday we should all have off to just enjoy a beautiful fall day. We don’t get enough of those.  Of course the food for this holiday would be composed entirely of fall veggies and fruits – squash, pumpkin, apples, cauliflower…nom nom.

This is the year to start celebrating! Be sure to send me photos, recipes, decorations, and ideas for your holiday feasts!

An Earth Day Outfit

After a massive oil spill in California in late 1969, environmental concerns were brought to the forefront with the help of Earth Day founder Gaylord Nelson, U.S. Senator from Wisconsin. As a result, on April 22, 1970, 20 million Americans (that’s right 20 million!!) organized rallies coast-to-coast against the deterioration of the environment. Groups that had been fighting against all different environmental concerns suddenly realized they shared common values, creating a rare political alliance with support from both Democrats and Republicans.

Since it’s creation many groundbreaking laws have been passed including the Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act and the Endangered Species Act. Today, over 192 countries and more than 1 billion people participate in Earth Day activities, making it the largest civic observance in the world. How amazing is that?!

Want to attend an event or volunteer for Earth Day? Click here to find events and activities near you.

This Earth Day my friends and I decided to do something a bit different (in addition to volunteering). We decided to throw a party where you wear items made from recycled goods, as a way to both learn and show what you can do with all that stuff you toss in the trash. It’s also a very fun activity to get kids involved in Earth Day!

I decided there was one overall item I wanted to work with – the bags you get at stores. I wanted my outfit to be entirely made of this. I decided the skirt would be made of plastic grocery store bags, the top of paper bags, and maybe some added flair!

Final Outfit

Tada!

I was quite surprised at how amazing the outfit looked! I would actually wear the skirt again with a solid tank tucked in. Below are details on how the outfit came together. Hope it gives you some ideas for a fashion forward Earth Day outfit!

The skirt:

Time to gather all those plastic bags that have been piling up! If you need more you can go to your local supermarkets recycling bins, they probably have ones for plastic bags.

So many bags

Then split the bags into colors to see what you have to work with.

Bags by color

After that I did a color scheme of 6 gray, 6 white, 6 beige, and then for a pop of color two newspaper bags.

color scheme bags

Next I removed the elastic from an old skirt that was out of style and placed it through the plastic bag loops. This is much easier to do if you have an “assistant” hold the elastic for you while doing so. In total I used 140 bags, repeating the color scheme 7 times. I then sowed the elastic back together. You don’t have to be a great seamstress, just a couple stiches will do.

Plastic bag Skirt

The Top:

I wanted the top to be fitted since the skirt was full of poof! I used a large American Eagle Outfitters bag, because I loved how the logo looked like a broach. You can do the bag two ways, cut it down the back or slip it over your head and then fold it in the back. I liked the fold in the back option. I then cut some room on the sides under the armpits so it did not rub. I then cut the bottom off of the bag because it was too long and would rip when I walked. I folded the bottom in and used a glue gun to make sure it held. I then used a ribbon to tie it tight to keep it on. Thats it!

Paper Bag Top

The Flower Flair:

To add some final flair to the outfit I made a flower out of a plastic bag and attached it to the skirt with a safety pin. It is surprisingly easy to do, a couple folds and you’ll have a beautiful flower! You can always use the glue gun to keep the petals in place.

Step 1 – Take a plastic bag and cut it in half. Then fold it into a square.

step 1

Step 2 – Then fold each corner into the center. This creates a smaller square.

Step 2

Step 2

Step 3 – The repeat folding each corner into the center once again, creating an even smaller square.

step 3

Step 3

Step 4 – Then flip it over and fold each corner into the center again. This creates a pretty small square.

Step 4

Step 4

Step 5 – For the next step you do not need a mug but I find it easiest if you use one. Flip the square back over and place it on the cup. The peel back each corner one by one. Peel back the first 4 corners and then the next 4 corners.

Step 5

 Step 5

Step 5

Step 5

Step 6 – Once you are left with the image above flip it over off the cup and it will look like the below. Then pull it from the middle down and you will have the flower that you see on my final dress.

Step 6

Step 6

and voila, the final product!

voila

Happy Earth Day!

My Love Letter To You

There are probably endless reasons why I’ve never loved Valentine’s Day – from breaking up with boyfriends on Valentine’s Day twice; to “single syndrome” where you watch Pretty Woman Pretty Womanand wish to be her character until you snap out of it and realize that would mean you’d be a prostitute; to all the pressure of finding the right gift. Speak of which, why is it that for a holiday created by Hallmark, it is pretty much impossible to find a normal card? I don’t want a sappy card that is like a 10 line poem about how great love is. I want a card that is funny and makes the other person smile? Or what about when you are new in a relationship and want to say “I’m in like with you,” but not “buy me a diamond ring yesterday.” Also, I know everything is email these days but really $4.99 for a card?! And they get me every time, cuz nothing says I remember this important occasion and didn’t buy this earlier today like a card.

So for this Valentine’s Day no stressing out over the perfect card, instead I am writing this love letter to you:

Go to the bathroom and look in the mirror. Smile. I know some days this is harder than others, but you are amazing. You are truly incredible. There is something about you that is refreshing, illuminating dare I say. Let it shine!

Listen to your heart and yours alone. You really do always know the answer to your questions, but sometimes you don’t like what it is and therefore seek out advice from others trying to get a better resolution. Stop overanalyzing everything you do and just let go. It is okay to complain about things that bother you, but acknowledge when the negativity that leaves your lips outweighs the positivity. Challenge yourself to tell someone something positive about your life every single day. Sometimes we just need to remind ourselves of all the great things around us, so share that no matter how little. Also, make sure to tell people positive things you see in them. It’s common to say thank you when someone holds a door for you, but when someone helps you complete your work at work or someone cleans the house, we forget to thank him or her. Show appreciation and it will come back in double.

Flowers = Laughter - All rights reserved by karataPut away some money every month to buy yourself a gift. You are so busy that sometimes you forget to pamper yourself. Ralph Waldo Emerson said, “Earth laughs in flowers.” When is the last time you bought yourself some laughter? Take the time to do this, even if it means penciling yourself in. This month, do something fun that you always wanted to do but never allotted the time to do. Schedule that trip, take those salsa classes, or go to that restaurant. You work hard every day – it’s time for some “you.”

Most importantly, remind yourself that life is an ongoing learning process. Enjoy how you surprise yourself. Open your mind and open your heart. And for those of you like me, that have built up a large wall on your heart – I know breaking it down completely is too much to ask, but every now and then it’s ok to open the door. Who knows maybe one day, the wall protecting your heart will not be made of bricks, it will be made of loved ones.

I end this love letter with a quote from the great 1940′s blues singer and pianist, Viviane Greene:

“Life is not about waiting for the storms to pass…
It’s about learning how to dance in the rain!”

Here’s to dancing! Happy Valentine’s Day!

Xoxo,
Zigi
